RC – Calligraphic Marks – Gestural Strokes (2013 – present)
The Rete-Chromes in this section feature brushstrokes themselves as prominent elements. In earlier artworks, these brushstrokes were layered in a series of contrasting colors, creating solid areas of imagery within the framework of the open unpainted screen. In later pieces, the brushstrokes are more liberated, with emphasis on the mark itself. The strokes appear independently with shapes in contrast to the surrounding unpainted screen, creating a dynamic connection. As a result of this interplay between positive/negative space, cast shadows enter the main body of the imagery. Unpainted screen, painted strokes, and cast shadows are now key players, sometimes with an additional element of circles.
